I agree - why aren't the kids themselves ever held accountable? When I look at my gradebook, my kids are failing not because I don't teach them well or because they aren't taught things that matter -- but because they don't come to school and when they do they don't turn in work. I had 78 zeroes in a class after the 1st 9 weeks this year. WTF? And that's my fault... how?
