Ulta - matum

I went to Ulta yesterday to get a foundation brush. This was the first makeup brush I've ever purchased, and I only bought one because I look and feel really tired these days and need some serious help. I figured that if my foundation was applied more evenly - in all the crevices of my face - then maybe I wouldn't look so much like a worn out 30 something high school teacher with a four month old baby at home. Did I mention I also have a cat? I do. I have a cat. I am a 30 something year old high school teaching cat lady with a baby. Not. So. Sexy.

Anyway, this was my first Ulta experience and I have to say that I was seriously taken aback by it. I was completely uncomfortable. I walked around and was acutely aware that I was the only one NOT made up completely. Every woman there was wearing makeup - perfectly applied - and even though their clothes indicated that some of them just rolled out of bed and ran to Ulta because they were out of shampoo and they needed it for their morning shower, they were all adorable. Also their hair was morning messy but in a cute way - as in NOT ratted yet still remarkably flat like mine is in the morning - a little tousled and still styled from a night of cosmopolitans and flirting at the trendy, Jason Mraz playing cocktail lounge.

In short, I am not that girl.

I've never been that girl.

So I grabbed my makeup brush, rushed towards the check out line with my head down, and ran out of the store to stand next to all of the husbands at Golf World so that I would feel a little more comfortable. GOLF WORLD, people!

And for better or worse, I have always been the one who went au naturale (before Niki Taylor made it fashionable in the 90's) when my friends were getting their hair and nails done, but that was mostly because I didn't really give a sh*t about my appearance. Or was it that I was afraid I wouldn't measure up? I can't remember. I do know that I was skinny when curves were in, I had a messy perm when strait and flippy hair was the fashion, and I wore t-shirts, flannels, and baggy jeans probably just to piss off my mom. Also I liked to climb trees.

I've never been girly. I never wore makeup either. In fact, when I actually tried to apply it for prom, my little brother told me I "looked like a whore" just as my date rang the doorbell. I was a little stung by his remark, but at the same time, he had a good point. Unless it was a special occasion, I only wore makeup (read stage makeup) for dance recitals. So that's what I was working with - bright red blush, blue eye shadow, and, yes, whore red lipstick. I didn't know the benefit of whore red lipstick until much later.

Needless to say, I didn't have many dates. Or rather, I had many first dates but was never girlfriend material. I was stuck between the boys I shunned- who loved me - had been in love with me since third grade - who always remembered me on Valentines day, or who sat outside on my front porch all night to prove his devotion(!), and the ones who didn't even notice me, except for the occasional "glad you're one of the guys - and don't get any ideas here," hand shakes etc. Honestly, that wasn't horrible. I had a whole hellovalotta fun with my guy friends who happened to talk to me about the girls they loved.

But back to Ulta. My Ulta encounter intimidated me enough that I immediately made a cut and color hair appointment for today, brushed on my foundation with my new foundation brush, and applied some serious eyeliner so that when all was said and done, I could model stomp into Ulta confidently with "These Boots Were Made for Walkin'" as my theme song.

Unfortunately, the very second I walked in today, that same intimidation seized me. I ran to the nearest stand which happened to be the lipstick display, grabbed the first tube my fingers could grasp -a shade more suitable for pig kissing - and ran like hell to the check out.

Ginger you crack me up. I just bought my first set of "real make-up" about a year ago, and it was from MaryKay and my bestfriend sold it to me in private. So I totally feel you. I have never been a girly girl and make-up is a foriegn language to me as well. Your whole blog cracked me up. Oh yea and I have never heard of Ulta what is that?

Ginger said...

Hi Dee!
It's nice to hear from you! I hope you and yours are well in Nevada! Ulta is this salon/makeup store. It's not even the place I went to get my hair done - that is a hole in the wall place and my hairdresser has more tatoos than Dennis Rodman. But anyway, the store isn't even that hoity-toity. I just have an aversion to it for some reason..
Thanks for stopping by!
Love ya!

G - I am a girly girl and those kinds of situations intimidate me. Those women are so fake and you are much more together than their perfect little hair dooos make it appear that they are.

OK enough venting.

I am not wonder woman by the way. But I sure appreciate the compliment on my blog.

This post of yours was so good. I really enjoyed it.

First, I've never noticed you looking like a whore. EVER.

Secondly, walking in Ulta even makes me feel like I don't measure up...and I wear makeup pretty much every day now (although I used to be the flannel girl in baggy jeans too as you probably remember).

Thirdly, you are beautiful. Just in case you haven't had the ability to notice lately doesn't mean that it is any less true.

Aw, man! We just got a Sephora here, but I won't let myself spend more than 10 minutes inside it-- it's a problem (just ask Christine).

I understand your feelings, but there's hope. Don't be intimidated: some people that go in there may suck, but the people that work there are just super into makeup (which is awesome, because they are very very willing to share their experiences/knowledge about what is good and what works, etc.) BUT...

You have to understand that women try really hard to get that messy-chic look-- really hard!
No offense to my generation, but I see a lot of girls on college campuses wearing track shorts, undershirts, a cute bag, full makeup, and hair done-- what is that?! Look, if I'm going to look like I'm working in the yard or running a mile, then so is my face and hair. Just keep reminding yourself that it's a little silly.

You're a strong lady! Next time I'm in town we're going on an Ulta excursion! It'll be like Christmas morning, lol!

Chelle said...

I would have felt the same as you. Then again, I would love to simply have the TIME to get ready, and I mean, really get ready. Not that I would use it to "beautify" myself, but whatever.

Like you, I was always "one of the guys" too, and oh well, it's been helpful in many ways...or something like that.

What was my point? Oh yes, being showered is progress enough for me. one day, i might remember how to fix my hair and put on make-up. Dear Lord, I have become one of those frumpy, wear sweats everyday (or in my case, wind pants), stay at home moms I swore I would never be! Yikes...I should go put on make-up, NOW!

Hey Ginger,

I hope you do not mind I got your blog off of Jen's blog page. If you want I started blogging also and you can go and check out my page.

You had me laughing so hard. I have worn make up but when I did for the first time my Mom took me to a place and they gave me yes "dark blue eye shadow" I thought I was so cool and could not wait to wear it with my blue outfit to the mall. I have now learned Thanks to a friend who sells Mary Kay how to put on make up and it helps me now. I was also feeling like a frumpy Mom and went and got a new hair cut. That totally helped me. I hope you enjoy your new brush and enjoy your time getting your hair done.

Ginger said...

Thank you, my friends! You guys rock and are so supportive! I'm a lucky, lucky, flat haired girl! :)

Ginger said...

Oh and to answer Chelle,
It's like using a paint brush and is fairly effective.. Odd. But effective.

And even without makeup you probably radiated. There were always those girls who could "pull it off". I was never one of those.

Magaly Guerrero said...

I looked at your picture and you are very pretty, do you really need make up? *Stop rolling your eyes girls* lol I don't wear much make up, maybe mascara and eyeshadow if I feel particularly dangerous one day.

Anyway, this post isn't about that, huh? But I wanted to point it out. I do understand getting the "Pretty Woman" treatment when it comes to shopping. For instance, I have gone to a chic store to buy a suit, um... wearing not so trendy running clothes and have gotten the "what is she doing here?" stare. I usually turn around and tell the "what the hell?" Okay, that's a lie , I don't say that. I usually buy what I need and run for the door, but I really thinking WHAT THE HELL!

Sandra Winn said...

Oh, gosh, I can relate! I'm one of those "only wear makeup on special occasion" type of gals. Even then, it isn't that much.

My mother always wore makeup and very well, she was always beautiful. However, when it came off? Yikes! Not really but it was that noticeable of a difference. I decided not to wear it everyday so that when I married and had children, they'd get used to my natural face...and they are. No scaring my hubs and kids first thing in the morning because of it. :-)

Have a great SITS day!

HAPPY SITS Day! Love this recount of Ulta...I can relate. My first intro to Ulta was when my BFF dragged me to one in Atlanta about 5 years ago. She was determined to save me from my au natural, tomboyish ways (or what she called unprofessional). I was totally intimidated, but by all products. It took several years figure out a beauty regimen. I'm still not big on make-up, but I have to say that I have become a skin care fiend. It has kept my 30-something skin looking like a 20-something. So, I was glad to see Ulta everywhere in Dallas. Now we're getting an Aveda school too! Cheap manicures and pedicures are on the way!

4.) Set with powder.

Works everytime!

I used to wear perfect, gracefully applied make up when Hubby and I first started dating. 7 years and 3 kids later, I'm having a good day just to get my hair brushed. I think that it's important to feel as good as possible about yourself, but not to worry about what other people are thinking.

Well, as much as that is possible. That's certainly easier said than done.

HOWEVER
I do not make myself up every day. I'll do it to go out, interviews, when the "big boss" is in at work.
Often you will find me in jeans and a t shirt with my hair pulled back (no fake hair!)
Places like Ulta and Sephora intimidate me! Even if I AM made up I wonder if it looks good enough? If i ask a question will the girl go "OMG this girl couldn't apply makeup to save her life!"

Ginger:

Oh and to answer Chelle,

I've been wanting to check out the new Ulta by my house but haven't had a good enough day to go in, so I've been putting it off. Because it's not only bad that I'll be taking my wild two year old in, heaven forbid I not look like a supermodel!
